performance of a powdered activated carbon (pac) augmented activated sludge process treating semi-aerobic leachate

چکیده
semi-aerobic leachate is characterized by organic matter (cod, bod) which is relatively low in concentration and difficult to biodegrade. in conventional treatment systems, the low biodegradability is attributed to partial stabilization of leachate at the landfill. biological treatment of leachate in malaysia is not well established and any important data for the treatment process is not available. the behavior of microbes is unknown for semi aerobic leachate. this research was conducted to establish some of the important data in the biological treatment of semi-aerobic leachate with and without the influence of powdered activated carbon (pac). for the present study, semi aerobic leachate was collected from pulau burung landfill site (pbls), nibong tebal, penang, malaysia. the experiment involved operating two 16 l laboratory-scale activated sludge reactors in parallel at room temperature and adjusted to ph of 6.5â±0.5. one of the reactors was supplemented with powdered activated carbon (pac) of 75-150 î¼m size to observe its effect on leachate biodegradation. the results showed enhanced reactor performance due to pac addition cod, nh4-n, no3-n, tkn, bod and colour removals was higher.

متن کاملcomparison of influence of walnut shell, clay and powdered activated carbon on settleability of activated sludge
the activated sludge process is the most used biological wastewater treatment method in the world. sludge bulking is one of the most common problems relateing to activated sludge wastewater treatment, and this fact causes poor settling in secondary sedimentation tank. sludge volume index(svi) and the zone settling velocity(zsv) are parameters to quantify the settleability of activated sludge . ...
متن کاملComparison of natural organic matter adsorption capacities of super-powdered activated carbon and powdered activated Carbon.
We examined the natural organic matter (NOM) adsorption characteristics of super-powdered activated carbon (S-PAC) produced by pulverizing commercially available, normal PAC to a submicron particle size range. The adsorption capacities of S-PAC for NOM and polystyrene sulfonates (PSS) with molecular weights (MWs) of 1.1, 1.8, and 4.6 kDa, which we used as model compounds, were considerably high...
متن کاملApplication of powdered activated carbon (PAC) for membrane fouling control in a pilot-scale MBR system.
Membrane fouling is considered to be the most serious drawback in wastewater treatment when using membrane bioreactors (MBRs), leading to membrane permeability decrease and efficiency deterioration. This work aims to develop an integrated methodology for membrane fouling control, using powdered activated carbon (PAC), which will enhance the adsorption of soluble microbial products (SMP) and imp...
متن کاملDynamic Performance Analysis and Simulation of a Full Scale Activated Sludge System Treating an Industrial Wastewater Using Artificial Neural Network
Due to changeable nature of the industrial wastewaters, proper operation of an industrial wastewater treatment plant is of prior importance in order to keep the process stability at the desired conditions. In this mean, simulation of the treatment system behavior using artificial neural network (ANN) can be an effective tool. This paper evaluates long term performance and process stability of ...
